IMPACT INITIATIVE
A soul-searching and practical e-learning solution for the essential mental aspects of studying abroad
Recent studies indicate that international students frequently express feelings of heightened loneliness, anxiety, and stress in comparison to their domestic peers. The immense effort required to uproot oneself and settle in a foreign land isn’t always apparent at first glance. It entails crafting an entirely new existence devoid of familiar comforts, encompassing the daunting tasks of managing finances, securing accommodation, arranging insurance and healthcare, maintaining academic performance, navigating cultural disparities, contemplating career paths, and even navigating the complexities of dating life. All of these challenges unfold during a pivotal period in one’s life, often in one’s twenties, when self-identity is still a work in progress. A mundane pre-departure checklist is not enough, as research and news have repeatedly revealed.
A comprehensive study conducted by NAFSA, the largest nonprofit association dedicated to international education and exchange, sheds light on concerning data related to college students’ mental health (“Addressing Mental Health Issues Affecting International Students“, 2019)––
(A) One in three college freshmen experiences mental illness, according to a 2018 American Psychological Association (APA) study, which surveyed 14,000 students across 19 colleges in eight countries (Australia, Belgium, Germany, Mexico, Northern Ireland, South Africa, Spain, and the United States)

Deepened comprehension of the vital cross-cultural and interpersonal skills necessary for social integration. Given that relocation involves establishing new social connections, immersing oneself in different cultures, and forming support networks, this understanding is pivotal.
Early preparation provides families with the time to engage in open and honest discussions about the emotional aspects of studying abroad and establish support systems and resources to assist both the student and parents throughout the studying abroad process.
