A CUE LIFE TRANSITION SERIES
Welcome to The Becoming Lab, a digital learning space designed to accompany the becoming journey of global students before their departures. It is a 6-hour, narrative-based learning experience to be completed over a semester, with each session lasting 15–20 minutes. Blending immersive storytelling, animations, research-backed insights, interactive prompts, and peer support, it guides students through the personal transition towards becoming global students and independent adults while building a life across borders.Â
The Becoming Lab is divided into three acts—Departure, Arrival, and Return—mirroring the typical structure of a compelling Hollywood movie.
The Becoming Lab is grounded in human-centred design, offering story-based modules that follow the lives of two fictional yet deeply relatable students — James, a local teen preparing to study abroad in two years, and Mandeep, a Third-Culture Kid facing a major relocation in one. As their stories unfold, through shifting friendships, evolving family dynamics, and the emotional terrain of global mobility, learners are invited to see themselves reflected in the characters’ journeys. These narratives offer both mirrors and windows: chances to recognize their own transitions and to glimpse experiences beyond their own. The Becoming Lab creates space to pause, process, and grow, one cue at a time.

From The Consent Lab to The Becoming Lab, CUE keeps our promise to create A Life Transition Space For Everyone. Why “lab” again? Because becoming is an experiment, a glorious, messy mix of trial and error, culture shock, identity twists, and unexpected growth spurts. In this lab, students imagine futures, rehearse their next acts, rewrite their inner voices, as they prepare to cross national borders and inner thresholds.
The Becoming Lab is currently in its early R&D phase. The CUE team is actively reviewing literature, crafting animation scripts, and designing experiential exercises. Below, you’ll find our first and second finalized scripts, a glimpse into the lives of James and Mandeep, the two characters at the heart of this journey. These two excerpts capture how each learning session of 15-20 minutes unfolds, beginning with a 5-minute animation with stories, followed by research-informed insights. After each animation, learners would walk into an exercise and/or a discussion part of the session.Â

In a world that constantly asks students to perform, The Becoming Lab just invite them to just be.
From choosing story-based learning, to deciding to let the story unfold through the phases of departing, arriving, and returning, to shaping how our characters live and grow within this narrative as role models, to defining the story’s core mission to normalize not knowing, and finally, to crafting how students should feel as they journey through the experience — behind every design lies deep care, thoughtful reflection, and intentional, smart creation.
Narrative helps the brain make meaning. Stories organize complexity, humanize abstract ideas, and help students feel seen. Each scene, each line of dialogue, each family dinner or late-night worry in the script is carefully crafted to embed key learning points without ever feeling like a lesson.
Mental walkthroughs, or mentally rehearsing a new experience, involve guiding students through the steps of an upcoming life phase, allowing them to visualize and mentally simulate the challenges and opportunities they may face. Each act serves to illuminate the different stages of the transition process, equipping students with the skills, knowledge, and emotional support needed to thrive in new environments.
Role models don’t need to be perfect, they just need to be real. Through James and Mandeep, our learners are offered mirrors and windows into relatable experiences. These characters aren’t heroes or experts; they’re fellow travellers figuring things out. Their evolving stories help students externalize, reflect, and reimagine their own. When students follow someone else’s growth, they often begin to notice the quiet momentum of their own.
We design for the psychological experience of waiting, wondering, and anticipating. The Becoming Lab begins not on the flight, but long before, when students are still at home, in classrooms, saying subconscious farewells to familiarity and not quite yet knowing what comes next. By acknowledging the many in-betweens in the personal, familial, social, academic, cultural and cross-border transitions, we normalize the in-betweens and empower students to hold space for uncertainty with more grace.
We called it a Lab because becoming isn’t a straight path, it’s an experiment. In this space, students try on new ways of thinking, feeling, and relating. They rehearse boundaries, ask questions, get things wrong, and reflect again. There’s no “right way” to grow here, just space, safety, and scaffolding. In a world that often asks students to perform, the Lab invites them to be.
Students are expected to give the right answer on tests, and to perform the right moves in life – but – life isn’t a multiple-choice exam. What’s right for each of us can only be known through being real to ourselves and being real in the world. In The Becoming Lab, we create space for this kind of being, alongside the messy, beautiful kind of becoming.
Integrating the Becoming Lab into your institution’s digital ecosystem is fast, flexible, and requires little technical setup on your end. Here’s how it works:
You’ll receive a plug-and-play package that can be uploaded directly into your institution’s Learning Management System (LMS), such as Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, or others.
Your IT or instructional design team can upload the package in minutes. No custom coding or technical development is required.
Upon request, we provide anonymized participation data and completion rates to help your institution track engagement, inform programming, and report on learning impact.
While most institutions prefer to host The Becoming Lab on their own Learning Management System (LMS), we also offer the option for students to access the program directly through CUE’s secure learning platform. This is ideal for institutions seeking a quick setup with minimal technical involvement. Students simply receive a unique link and complete the program at their own pace — no installation or integration required.

Designed with flexibility in mind, The Becoming Lab can be integrated seamlessly into a school’s existing well-being, life skills, or advisory curriculum. Students can also access the Lab outside of school hours, allowing them to explore at their own pace and revisit concepts as needed.
We are always seeking passionate, talented people to contribute to growing CUE. If you’re interested in the opportunity to use your unique expertise and skills to make a social impact, contact us with your CV and tell us what you’d be able to bring to our business!
